Hundreds of spectators and special interest vehicle owners gathered in Potomac Falls, Virginia, on a beautiful Sunday in September, to raise a record-breaking $28,504.46 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) to fight blood cancer. The fourth annual Carz Cruizin to Cure Cancer was presented by McLean Insurance Agency and featured more than 140 classic, antique, sports and custom cars, trucks and motorcycles that were on display and judged by a highly experienced group of 14 concourse judges.

McLean Insurance Agency, with the help of numerous volunteers and sponsors, organized the annual event to honor the memory of its founder, Henry C. Megill, Jr. who battled a rare form of lymphoma, Waldenstroms Macroglobulemia, for several years before passing away in 1990. Sponsors included Konica Minolta, Volkswagen Group of America, and United Bank, as well as local sponsors, such as Ted Britt Chevrolet, Tetra Construction, and Raymond James Financial. In addition to the event’s financial sponsors, local restaurants, such as Bungalow Lakehouse Restaurant, Famous Dave’s BBQ, Jersey Mike’s Subs, O’Faolain’s Irish Pub & Restaurant, and Glory Days Grill, donated food to raise money for LLS.

Each year, the local community—businesses and individuals—give their time and money to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, which is the world’s largest non-profit health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research and providing education and patient services. “I am very proud of all the volunteers who join us in bringing the community together to help cure cancer” says Doug Megill, President and CEO of McLean Insurance.

ABC 7’s meteorologist Eileen Whalen guest hosted the awards ceremony. Top awards included the Judges’ Choice Award, which was awarded to a 1967 Corvette Stingray, owned by Mike Burgoon; and the Chairman’s Choice Award, to a Pontiac GTO Convertible, owned by Don LaRue. A 1958 Lister Jag, owned by Bob Williams received Volkswagen’s Sponsor’s Award.

Throughout the event, the Sterling Volunteer Fire Company and Rescue Squad amazed spectators with extraction demonstrations, using Jaws of Life equipment, on a wrecked fire department demo.
