The Elixir of LifeSeptember 12, 2007 An interviewer asked Gene Hackman, "What is the secret to your consistent and incredible acting talent?" Hackman replied instantly, "Enthusiasm!" Hackman said he always did his best acting when he was enthusiastic. In preparation for his work, Hackman said he takes time to make sure he has a positive attitude. He takes whatever steps are necessary to raise his energy level. Enthusiasm comes from the Greek word "entheos" meaning to be inspired by the Gods. When we are enthusiastic, we are excited about what we are doing. When we are enthusiastic, we pursue our tasks with zeal and fervor. When we are enthusiastic, we do our best work. There is a correlation among our energy level, our results, and our enthusiasm. The other side is also true. When we are not inspired and enthusiastic, we have a low energy level. Then we are in a weakened state and our performance is impaired. There are good lessons worth pondering that Mr. Hackman revealed during his interview. First, Hackman sees himself as being in charge of his own enthusiasm. He takes responsibility for himself and for doing his best work. Second, Hackman is not waiting for the world to spark his inspiration. He proactively acts to inspire and excite himself. We can use many techniques to increase our enthusiasm. We can listen to uplifting music, read inspiring works, surround ourselves with positive people, or visit inspiring places. However, there is nothing more powerful than simply acting enthusiastically. When we stand erect, walk briskly, smile brightly, and greet everyone in a positive and perky manner, we directly affect our own energy level and the energy levels of the people around us. Years ago, I worked with a man who was in the habit of saying about five times a day, "I just love this work. I can't believe they pay us to do it!" He was infectious. To this day, I often find myself saying or thinking his exact words. I will bet Gene Hackman has similar thoughts. The Moral of the Story The moral of the story is that if you want to be energized and enthusiastic all you have to do is start acting as if you already are energized and enthusiastic. The power of positive and enthusiastic thinking is good. The power of positive and enthusiastic acting is even better. And the power of positive and enthusiastic thinking and acting is better still.
