Life on the Lighter Side

July 10, 2007

Don't you just love it when you come across someone who is a real professional and who has a sense of humor? Here are three examples I have encountered in the medical community.

Just Checking

I called in to a doctor's office to provide some information required for insurance purposes. The woman taking the information apologized because there were many questions; however, she said she would move through them quickly and not take any more of my time than necessary. She then began clicking through the questions in rapid-fire mode. When it came to a question about my wife's birth date the woman asked the question and then confirmed the date.

"Thank you, that is all of my questions," she said. "Now do you have a calendar?"

"Yes," I said.

"Good," she said. "Would you please look in July to make sure you have the 8th noted as your wife's birthday?"

I laughed and told her the date is circled in red.

"Very good, just checking," she said.

Dinner Out

On another occasion, my wife had gone in for a minor procedure where she had anesthesia. After the procedure, a nurse came over and provided instructions to my wife and me. She concluded with, "Do not operate equipment and no driving for the next six hours. Your husband will have to take you out for dinner tonight or bring dinner in. If there is any laundry to be done, it should be done today and he should do it. Are there any questions?"

Don't You Lie to Me!

On a third occasion, I was in for a procedure that involved some significant pain for a few days. When I was getting ready to leave, the main nurse who had taken care of me was helping me get out of bed into a wheel chair. As she was helping me up, she saw that I was struggling a bit and she asked if I was in pain. I said no. She snapped back, "Don't you lie to me!"

I laughed aloud and said to my wife, "Did you hear that? Don't you lie to me! I think my nurse just threatened me." My nurse cracked up and we all had a good laugh. The pain I had had was gone.

The Moral of the Story

The moral of the story is humor is the great elixir in life. Lighten up. It will make you feel good and put a smile on the faces of those around you.

Sincerely,

Jim Ball
